Advanced Loud Band Intensive with Robert Wiemken, Director

The Germanic Lands 16th-century sources of “instrumental” repertoire: Vienna Öst. Nb. MS 18810, Munich MS 328-331, the Regensburg Partbooks and works by Michael Praetorius

This program will allow a select group of advanced players of cornetto, shawm, sackbut and dulcian the opportunity to focus their entire week at the Madison Festival on forming and polishing a historically-based reed and brass ensemble such as flourished in German courts, cathedrals and towns during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The program will consist of three sessions a day.

Early Morning Class:
Advanced Loud Band Ensemble Technique and Repertoire
Topics: clef systems, transpositions, modes and musica ficta

Mid-Morning Class:
A – Advanced Double Reed Technique and Repertoire (Bob Wiemken)
B – Sackbut Technique and Repertoire (Greg Ingles)
C – Cornetto Technique and Repertoire (Kiri Tollaksen)

Early Afternoon Class
Advanced Loud Band: Polishing Repertoire

Emphasis will be placed on reading from three original manuscripts of music, two of which were intended for the official German wind bands of the main 16th and early 17th centuries. Composers will include the justly famous Heinrich Isaac, Heinrich Finck, Paul Hofhaimer and Ludwig Senfl, among others. In addition, works from the newly available late sixteenth century Regensburg MS will be read along with works by the composer and theorist Michael Praetorius. Some familiarity with various clefs and transpositions will be useful.

The week’s efforts will culminate in an hour-long recital open to the Festival participants and the general public on Saturday, July 14, the final day of the Festival week. Participation by permission of the instructor. Maximum of 8 participants. For further information, contact Bob Wiemken at bob@piffaro.com.
