Madison Bach Musicians: Baroque Holiday Concert: Works by Josquin, Schütz, and J. S. Bach
December 8 @ 7:15 pm - 10:00 pm
The eighth annual Baroque Holiday Concert is a chamber ensemble of voices and period instruments warm our hearts in winter with glorious music from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The program features selections from one of Josquin des Pres’ last completed masterworks, the Missa Pange Lingua (c. 1515). Martin Luther was so moved by Josquin’s compositional genius, he wrote: “Josquin is the master of the notes. The notes must do as he wills; as for other composers, they have to do as the notes will.” The program will also present some of the most exquisite spiritual miniatures ever penned—Heinrich Schütz’s Kleine geistliche Konzerte were written during the 1630s specifically for small ensembles, which were all that were available during the devastation of the Thirty Years War.
The program will end with two works by Bach, the bouncy and charming duet, Wir eilen mit schwachen, doch emsigen Schritten (Cantata 78) and his glorious Motet, Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden. Looking ahead to our final concert of the season, The Mozart Miracle, remember it was Wolfgang Amadeus himself who—when he journeyed to Leipzig in 1789 and heard the Thomaskirche choir perform a Bach motet—exclaimed, “Now here is something one can learn from!” Pre-concert lecture begins at 7:15 pm. Concert begins at 8:00 pm.
